Invest in your knitwear

Winter is on the way and it’s time to invest in the necessary knitwear and outerwear in order to face and embrace the season. Knitwear is a menswear essential; the cardigan, the crew neck, v neck and polo neck all hold a vital place in a man’s wardrobe, versatile and perfect for layering, serious style made easy. All there is left to do is choose the right pieces... and we're here to help.

From left to right: Clandon, Bibury and Oare

The cable knit has made its appearance in waves over the last few autumn/winters, yet it continues to return as a solid winter wardrobe staple. Clandon is Merc’s knitted shawl collar cardigan, the front cable knit pattern provides a classic detailing and depth to the garment while the zip fastening makes this item perfect for layering or wearing as an over garment.  The key to wearing a cable knit is to keep it simple, let the garment do the talking.

Stripes aren’t just for the summer; try them in tonal or contrasting winter shades on fine knits or cardigans. Bibury is one of Merc’s winter stripes and our seasonal answer to the ever popular polo shirt, keeping a polo collar and a thin button placket.

Winter doesn’t have to be about monochromatic colours and the darkest shades of the spectrum, while they can be a great foundation for almost any look why not add a splash of colour into your wardrobe. The oare cardigan is Merc’s blast of warmth into the winter, fantastic mustard yellow that looks great against the wintery shades of brown and grey.

From left to right: Zander, Conrad and Epsom

Call it the polo neck, roll neck or turtle neck, this style has long dipped in and out of men’s fashion and like it or not, it’s back. Spotted across the season’s menswear shows, the roll neck was repeatedly worn in the same way and the key is to layer. Under suits, a classic blazer or an overcoat, Zander is Merc’s fine gauge roll neck in 100% wool available in a fantastic selection of shades for winter.

The V neck jumper is a fundamental basic all year round and one of Merc’s core styles. Introducing new shades for the season, the Conrad jumper is 100% wool and ideal for layering over shirts and polo shirts or under blazers and over coats.

Another shape set for this Autumn Winters knitwear is the Crew neck. A great thing about this shape is versatility, it can be worn as an over layer but this season it’s all about wearing under a shirt, either worn open or buttoned to just under the neck. Merc’s Epsom is ideal for styling this way, a slim fitted, fine gauge jumper softly knitted in 100% wool.

Now you have the latest on current knitwear styles and shapes it's down to you to choose your staples.

Merc at the Carnaby Catwalk!
The Carnaby Catwalk is an exciting and unique event that brings together the stores of Carnaby and collaborates their collections.

Saturday 10th September saw Carnaby Street transform into an open air catwalk; this free event showcased fashion talent and exclusive fashions from boutiques and shops to be found across the 13 streets of Carnaby. Garments were handpicked from the latest Autumn/Winter collections and styled by Nova Dando, Sarah Owen, Kim Nolan, Hayley Nunn, John William and Emma Freemantle into a series of eccentric and inspired looks.

Carnaby Street is steeped in strong and cultural fashion history and over the years has seen and inspired so many styles, tribes and sub cultures that this event could only happen here - and we were very proud to be a part of it.

The first look features Merc's classic Hemmingway jacket, a core Merc style worn unconventionally over the shoulders - another great verstile men's style that suits the girls! The second and third looks feature a cravat and tie from Merc, great accessories also worn in an alternative way.

The stylists got creative and layered Mercs plaid Mack shirt with the Julian striped shirt, proving that mens clothing doesn't always have to be worn by men, nor worn in a conventional mannor! A Merc cravat accessorises a casual slack look and the blue check Island shirt from Merc is worn around the waist.

For all of those who attended the Carnaby Catwalk we hope you had a great day... All those who missed out catch the best catwalk clips in the Carnaby Catwalk video here.

Wednesdays Wardrobe

A little something for your wardrobe on Wednesday!

The Geffen Shirt is a classic long sleeve, button down shirt in a slim check of browns and blues, a perfect colour combination for this season.
Geffen looks great layered under the Conrad V-neck jumper in a complimentary shade of chocolate brown, alternatively with the Jenz V-neck tank in Navy. Team with Redcar, a smart woolen houndstooth trouser and finish by accessorizing with a practical and on trend fair isle printed scarf Cobham.
