Merc Fans Blur Win Outstanding Contribution to Music BRIT Award

Ever since the heady days of 90s Britpop, when the boys were regulars at the Merc flagship Carnaby Street store, we’ve loved a bit of Blur. Now, 21 years after the release of their debut album, Leisure, Damon, Graham, Alex and Dave were awarded the Outstanding Contribution to Music gong at last night’s BRIT Awards.

Graham Coxon, legendary Blur guitarist and solo artist at the Merc flagship store on London’s Carnaby Street

As their sound developed from the early baggy leanings of There’s No Other Way, to the lo-fi American-influenced indie rock of hits like Beetlebum via the cheeky chappy Britpop stylings of Parklife and The Great Escape which firmly established them on an international scale, so did their style. But through all their looks - the sharp Mod inspired tonic-suits to their ubiquitous Harrington and polo shirt combos - Blur’s look has always remained quintessentially English. If you want to grab a bit of classic Blur style, as well as our aforementioned Harrington jackets and classic men's polo shirts, check out the Braham Knitted Polo (£65) or Bayston Summer Parka (£140) from our new collection.

Congratulations to the Blur boys and all the winners, particularly to the other successful Merc fans - Ed Sheeran, who scooped two gongs – Best British Breakthrough Act and Male Solo Artist, and One Direction. Great work!

Brit Awards – Rock A Nominee's Look

The Brit Awards are almost here!

The full list of nominations for arguably the UK’s most prestigious music awards is below but we'll be picking out a few of our fashion favs from now until the awards ceremony on 21st February and showing you how to get their look. First up, a quick look at everyone’s favourite indie ginger, new-comer Ed Sheeran.

Ed first came to our attention in early 2011 which turned out to be a great year with his debut single ‘The A Team’ hitting third spot in the UK charts and follow up ‘You Need Me’ topping the UK R&B charts. His unique blend of folk, hip hop, beatbox and grime is all the more unusual for having the accessibility of more mainstream indie / pop sounds.    From his Chuck Taylors and low slung jeans to his penchant for comfy knits and hoodies, Ed’s laid back fashion swag takes American street fashion and adds a quintessentially English indie vibe. Check him out in Merc’s ‘The Conrad’ jumper (£65) above. We’d suggest wearing it over our red Druce T-shirt (currently reduced to £10) with Merc’s Ashville jeans (£60) and Walmer belt (£35) to get Ed’s look.

You can also vote for Ed Sheeran to win British Breakthrough Artist at the Brits by voting here.

The Rifles

One of our favourite bands is back on tour and they popped into our Carnaby Street Shop the other week to pick up a few bits for the road. With touring comes press and first stop, T4’s Freshly Squeezed.

Joel picked up our Alnwick Leather Jacket. He has great taste as this jacket has flown off the shelves this season. We do, however, have the Holkham still in stock, a four pocket leather jacket with great detailing and lovely full lining.

Grab a sale bargain..

The Rifles weekender
Merc favourites, and Chingford's finest 5 piece band; The Rifles, are currently prepping for their forthcoming tour that will take place in March this year. The boys recently came to visit us at Merc to kit themselves out for their impending Live shows. We are anticipating great reviews from the Rifles tour as we are huge fans of their latest album, so much so that we are very privileged and extremely proud to be using Rifles track 'Romeo and Juliet' on our Spring Summer 2012 collection video.

Tickets are available from The Rifles website and you can click on the image below to be directed straight to their site.
